Record result for the Mauritius Ball Cover

With the auction of the Mauritius 1d Ball Cover, the anniversary auction of the Gärtner auction house truly became a ball of emotions. On 26 June 2021 at 9 a.m. at the Forum am Schlosspark in Ludwigsburg, the historic letter was called for four million euros. Four telephone bidders and initially one online bidder competed for the 1847 legend for twelve minutes. A German-speaking collector from Europe finally achieved the record price of 10,027,800 euros, earning applause in the auction hall. "Sensational price - I wish the new owner a lot of joy with it, as much joy as the last owners have had", said Christoph Gärtner about the success of this unique auction.

Other highlights of the auction found also new owners among the more than 4,000 bidders. The 24 cent Inverted Jenny (lot 144), a colour error of a U.S. stamp from 1918, achieved a price of over 433,000 euros. The 3 Kreuzer red instead of green (lot 269) from 1867 on a letter is considered by philatelists to be the most important item in Austrian philately and reached over 630,000 euros.

During the auction week of 21 - 26June 2021, many more top lots were offered, bringing in terrific results and a record breaking sale.
